Description

The relationship between law, technology and society is complex and multifaceted.  For example, technology itself, the societies and individuals who invent and consume technology, and the laws governing technology, are intricately implicated in the information we are able to access and the information others can access about us.

As we continue to incorporate new technologies, we shift the distribution of “winners” and “losers,” and change the balance of power in society.  Technological developments necessitate reconsideration of existing subjects in law, and increased dialogue both within law, and between law and other domains.

The Common Law Section and Civil Law Section of the Faculty of Law at University of Ottawa have recently created a new Centre for Law, Technology and Society.  In order to formally launch this new Centre the Law and Technology Group at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law is planning a one-day, multidisciplinary conference entitled, “Taking Stock of Tech: Reflections on Law, Technology and Society.”  The conference will consist of three multidisciplinary panels, as well as a number of keynote speakers, on a wide variety of subjects relating to Law and Technology in its broadest sense and from multiple perspectives.

At this conference, leading thinkers from various fields – including law, public policy, sociology, and engineering – will explore the legal, social, political and cultural implications of technologies through multiple lenses.  At the heart of the debate will be an exploration of what – if any – paradigm shifts technological developments compel, and how stakeholder-led discourse affects public dialogue.

This conference is geared towards scholars, students, policy-makers and the public-at-large.  It seeks to provoke, transform, push forward and hold back.  We hope you will join our Centre for Law, Technology and Society in the search for a novel understanding of humanity’s relationship with our inventions.
